项目介绍:

When we think about cinema, the images that often come to mind are of famous movie stars who dominate the screen with their incredible talent and beauty. Indeed, within cinema, very often these stars are women who are represented as something “to be looked at,” and much of the history of cinema has used the female as a spectacular object of desire. Feminist theory unravels this history, showing how and why cinema has tended to represent women in this way while also introducing a history of alternative visions of the female often created by women filmmakers. This course traces the history of international feminist film theory, from its origins within a narrowly defined academic realm to its current moment when attention to the complexities of gender studies, intersectional perspectives, and diverse aesthetics makes the topic global and relevant. We will cover the key topics related to gender in film, including the gaze, counter-cinema, subjectivity, sexual difference, film genres, and psychoanalysis; we will view iconic examples of these concepts; and we will screen a number of films that showcase a broad and global array of understandings of feminist and intersectional cinema. Students will learn how to engage critically with films as texts, with attention to the notions of identification, the apparatus, point of view, and narrative structure.
